This is one of the famous birding areas in Cusco, easily reach in a full day trip leaving Cusco or better is you are based in the Urubamba Valley, the birding is done along the road that goes to La Convencion Province, on the northwestern part of Cusco, this drive used to be a rough one but since road was paved, access has tremendously improved. To bird along this road selected stops are made at first at Peñas with scrubby vegetation where several interesting birds are found, some target birds include the endemics Chesnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, White-tufted Sunbeam, Rusty-fronted Canastero and Creamy-crested Spinetail as well as a great variety of hummers Giant, Black and Green tailed Trainbearers, Great Sapphire-wing, Shinning Sunbeam, Sparkling violetear, Tyrian metatail, Sword-billed and more. Other beauties include Golden-billed Saltator, Blue and Yellow Tanager, Andean Parakeets, Red-crested Cotinga and several more.

We’ll head for the Polylepis woodland at Abra Malaga. We’ll devote the whole morning to explore this unique habitat. Possibilities include Line-fronted Canastero, Ash-breasted Tit-tyrant (endemic), White-browed Tit-spinetail (endemic), Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Giant Conebill, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Andean Tapaculo, Tit-like Dacnis, Blue-mantled Thornbill, Andean Condor, Thick-billed Siskin, Junin Canastero (endemic) and more. Our major target bird here will be the endemic Royal Cinclodes, which we discovered here in the 80’s. On the valley floor we’ll check a variety of Ground-tyrants and Sierra-Finchs. After a picnic lunch we’ll concentrate on some local endemics on the west side, including Creamy-crested Spinetail, (endemic) Rusty-fronted Canastero, (endemic) White-tufted Sunbeam (endemic) and Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch (endemic). We return to Cusco or if you wish the Sacred Valley of the Incas and your hotel. B:L:
