El Calafate is beautifully situated on the Patagonian altiplano, just along the azure Lago Argentino. It was named after a typical bush of the area,known by its delicious fruits and its horned branches. The village, also known as the “Capital of the Glaciers”, is the starting point to visit Los Glaciares National Park, its forest, lakes and its best known character: Perito Moreno Glacier.

El Chaltén Description

El Chaltén is situated on the northern margin of Lago Viedma, in the confluence of rivers De las Vueltas and Fitz Roy, in the National Reserve Zona Viedma in Los Glaciares National Park. This landscape combines the magic of glaciers, hidden lagoons, estancias, Lake Viedma, and the magnetic presence of mount Fitz Roy. The summit of its unmistakable majestic silhouette is almost always covered in a cloud that the Tehuelche Indians thought was smoke, a mistake that gave origin to the name ´Chaltén´, which means volcano. El Chaltén is contiguous to Lake Viedma and its reserve, and has been declared National Hiking Capital for the variety of activities performed by hikers and climbers. Most outings start in town, and it is not necessary to be an expert to follow the circuits if you walk on a current trail. The granitic towers of the Torre and Fitz Roy mountains compose spectacular panorama together with glaciers Viedma, Upsala and Moyano, which drain into Lago Viedma.

We start early in the morning, picking you up at your hotel and from El Chaltén we leave towards Capri Lagoon. After about 20 min. of ascent, we arrive at the viewpoint of the Río de las Vueltas valley, example of the fabulous work of ice during the glaciations in Patagonia.

After a while of walking uphill, you arrive at the first viewpoint of the Fitz Roy massif where you appreciate in all their splendor the spiers such as that of the “S”, Saint Exupéry, Poincenot, Fitz Roy, Mermoz and Guillaumet.

From there we will walk for an hour and a half through beautiful Lengas forests to the Capri Lagoon, one of the favorite places for photography lovers.

After a break to enjoy the magnificent views and our box lunch, we continued 2 km in direction to our camp in Poincenot

After an hour of ascent with a gradient of 400 meters, you reach Laguna de los Tres. Upon reaching the maximum point of the path, on the moraine, the majestic figure of the Fitz suddenly opens before us Roy, the Los Tres Glacier and its lagoon that bathe the feet of this impressive granite mountain. The A sense of grandeur makes us feel the smallness of the human being compared to nature.

After a break to enjoy the “Premium” box lunch, we began the return.

Hike back to Puente Rio Electrico with english speaking guide Wewill walk for 1 hour through beautiful lenga forests inhabited by countless birds that with their singing will accompany us to the impressive and beautiful Mirador del Glaciar “Piedras Blancas”. We will continue descending for approximately 1 hour and a half until we reach the Puente del Río Eléctrico, where our private vehicle will be waiting for us to take us to Chaltén in half an hour.

We start early in the morning, picking you up at the hotel. From El Chaltén we will take the Laguna Torre trail, which after a short climb enters a small ñire forest. From there, the road begins to gain height as it aligns with the course of the Fitz Roy River until reaching to a viewpoint of the river canyon and Margarita Waterfall. The panorama shows the valley of the Fitz Roy River and its meandering watercourse in the background, framed by the unique Cerro Solo and the backdrop of the Adela range and the imposing Cerro Torre. After the first hour of walking we will arrive at the Cerro Torre viewpoint. Here we take advantage of take a short break while we enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the Cerro Torre massif, Cordón Adela and its glaciers. From there we will walk two more hours, crossing imposing lenga forests, ancient moraines glaciers and alluvial plains formed by ancient river courses, until reaching Laguna Torre. In this section there are possibilities of seeing a great variety of birds, among them, the Magellanic Woodpecker. In Laguna Torre you usually see amazing ice floes resulting from landslides in front of the Torre glacier. Different trails on the glacial moraine allow access to viewpoints such as the Maestri. After a break for lunch, we continue to the Camp where we will spend the night.
