Discover Bolivia Through Your Lens

Join Photo Tours Peru on an extraordinary 13-day Bolivia photography tour designed for photographers who want to explore some of South America's most dramatic landscapes, remote wilderness areas and spectacular night skies.

From the immense white expanse of the Salar de Uyuni to the snow-covered volcanic peaks of Sajama National Park, this private photography expedition combines landscape photography, astrophotography, geological wonders and authentic Andean scenery in one carefully planned journey.

Our adventure begins in La Paz, where the dramatic topography of the Andes provides an introduction to Bolivia's remarkable high-altitude environment. We then explore the otherworldly rock formations of Valle de las Ánimas before traveling to Sajama National Park, a remote wilderness of volcanoes, highland lagoons, traditional villages and ancient queñua forests.

The journey continues to the legendary Uyuni Salt Flats, where immense horizons and exceptionally dark surroundings create outstanding opportunities for minimalist landscape photography, creative compositions and night-sky photography. With two nights in the Uyuni region, we can plan dedicated sessions around sunrise, sunset and the Milky Way, with exact locations selected according to road access, weather and seasonal conditions.

Beyond the salt flats, the expedition ventures into the extraordinary landscapes of Incahuasi Island, Villa Mar and the remarkable rock formations known as Lost Italy. Here, sculpted sandstone, eroded canyons and unusual geological textures provide a different visual experience from the vast white landscapes of the Salar.

We continue into the remote Eduardo Avaroa region to photograph Laguna Colorada, a striking high-altitude lagoon known for its mineral-rich colors, Andean scenery and flamingos. The route then leads to Tupiza, where red sandstone formations, deep valleys and rugged mountains offer a final chapter of dramatic landscape photography before returning to Uyuni.

Throughout the journey, the itinerary prioritizes photographic opportunities rather than simply visiting destinations. Sunrise and sunset sessions, flexible stops, night-sky opportunities and time to work on compositions are central to the experience.

With a maximum of four photographers, private 4x4 transportation, carefully selected accommodation and photography-focused planning, Photo Tours Peru offers a more personal alternative to a conventional Bolivia sightseeing tour.

Whether your goal is to photograph the Milky Way above the Altiplano, capture the extraordinary geometry of the salt flats, or create a portfolio of Bolivia's volcanic and desert landscapes, this expedition offers a remarkable opportunity to explore the country with your camera.

Travel from La Paz to Uyuni, photograph Bolivia's most extraordinary landscapes, and finish your expedition with a private transfer to Uyuni Airport on Day 13.

etailed 13-day itinerary — 12 nights

The itinerary below is a proposed route for Photo Tours Peru, using the destination themes and photography-focused approach seen in the two reference operators as inspiration. It is original copy, with a route adapted to your requirement to finish in Uyuni

Day 1 — Arrival in La Paz, Bolivia

Overnight: La Paz · Hotel Casa Grande Suites or equivalent

Welcome to Bolivia, a country of dramatic Andean landscapes and extraordinary photographic possibilities. Upon arrival at El Alto International Airport, meet your private driver and transfer to your hotel.

Keep the first day relaxed to allow time to adjust to the altitude. Depending on your arrival time and how you feel, enjoy a gentle photographic introduction to La Paz, with views across the city's distinctive neighborhoods and surrounding mountains.

In the evening, meet your photography guide for a tour briefing covering the route, camera equipment, landscape techniques, astrophotography plans and the conditions expected in the Bolivian Altiplano.

Photography focus: Andean panoramas, urban landscapes, architecture and introductory travel photography.

Meals: Dinner, subject to arrival time.

Day 2 — Valle de las Ánimas: Andean Rock Formations

Overnight: La Paz · Hotel Casa Grande Suites or equivalent

After breakfast, travel to Valle de las Ánimas, or Valley of the Souls, one of the most distinctive geological landscapes near La Paz. Its towering, sharply eroded formations rise above the surrounding terrain, creating an impressive natural setting for landscape photography.

Spend the morning exploring selected viewpoints and composing images that combine the jagged rock formations with the Andean skyline. When visibility is favorable, the distant Cordillera Real and Illimani provide a dramatic backdrop.

Depending on access and weather, continue toward the nearby Palca Canyon area for additional perspectives on the region's eroded valleys and rugged terrain.

Return to La Paz in the afternoon for rest, image review and preparation for the journey to Sajama.

Photography focus: Wide-angle landscapes, geological textures, telephoto compositions and dramatic mountain backdrops.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch; dinner.

Day 3 — Journey to Sajama National Park

Overnight: Sajama · Tomarapi Ecolodge or equivalent

Leave La Paz and travel across the broad Andean plateau toward Sajama National Park. Along the way, the scenery gradually opens into expansive high-altitude plains, traditional settlements and distant volcanic peaks.

Allow time for photography stops whenever conditions offer compelling compositions. On arrival in the Sajama region, photograph the iconic Nevado Sajama, Bolivia's highest mountain, rising above the surrounding puna landscape.

If road conditions and arrival time permit, visit a nearby lagoon or a scenic viewpoint for late-afternoon light. As evening approaches, settle into the lodge and prepare for an early photographic start.

Photography focus: Volcanic landscapes, llamas, traditional Andean scenery and mountain silhouettes.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 4 — Sajama: Volcanoes, Lagoons and Andean Wilderness

Overnight: Sajama · Tomarapi Ecolodge or equivalent

Begin before sunrise to photograph the first light illuminating the slopes of Nevado Sajama. The mountain's changing colors, open foregrounds and surrounding highland plains offer a range of compositions for landscape photographers.

After breakfast, explore selected areas of the national park, which may include highland lagoons, queñua woodland, traditional villages, geothermal features and landscapes inhabited by vicuñas and Andean birds.

During the afternoon, work on layered compositions using the volcanic peaks, vegetation and open puna. If conditions are suitable, return to a favored viewpoint for sunset.

A night-sky session may be arranged if skies are clear and participants have acclimatized comfortably. At this elevation, temperatures can drop significantly after dark, so warm clothing and careful pacing are essential.

Photography focus: Sunrise and sunset landscapes, wildlife in its natural habitat, volcanic scenery and potential astrophotography.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 5 — Travel Across the Altiplano to Uyuni

Overnight: Uyuni salt-flat region · Hotel de Sal Luna Salada or equivalent

After breakfast, leave Sajama and travel toward Uyuni across Bolivia's immense high-altitude plateau. This is a substantial overland journey, so the day is designed around safe travel, comfort and selected photography stops rather than a tightly packed sightseeing schedule.

Observe the changing landscape as volcanic horizons, open plains and remote settlements give way to the salt-flat region.

Arrive at your salt hotel or lodge and settle in. If road conditions and arrival time allow, head to an accessible area of the Salar de Uyuni for a sunset photography session.

Photography focus: Altiplano travel landscapes, minimalist compositions, distant volcanoes and the first views of the Salar.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 6 — Uyuni Salt Flats: Sunrise, Sunset and Astrophotography

Overnight: Uyuni salt-flat region · Same hotel

Dedicate the day to the extraordinary landscape of the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat. The immense open horizon provides exceptional opportunities for minimalist photography, geometric compositions, creative perspective and images that emphasize scale.

Begin with sunrise on the Salar, when subtle changes in color and shadow create opportunities for clean, graphic landscape images. After breakfast and a rest, continue with photography stops selected according to the day's conditions.

The session may include salt-crust patterns, distant volcanoes, reflections where seasonal water is present, and carefully composed wide-angle scenes. Mirror-like reflections are dependent on rainfall and water levels and cannot be guaranteed.

In the late afternoon, return for sunset, followed by a dedicated astrophotography session if skies are clear. Depending on moonlight and seasonal conditions, the group may work on Milky Way compositions, star fields and wide-angle night landscapes.

Photography focus: Uyuni Salt Flats photography, Milky Way photography, starry skies, minimalist landscapes, reflections when available and long-exposure techniques.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 7 — Incahuasi Island and the Journey to Villa Mar

Overnight: Villa Mar region · Mallku Cueva or equivalent

Set out early across the salt flats toward Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop famous for its giant cacti and panoramic views across the white expanse of the Salar.

Explore the island and its surroundings, photographing the contrast between the textured cactus-covered terrain and the seemingly endless salt horizon. Access and walking routes will depend on local conditions and site regulations.

Continue south toward the more rugged landscapes of the southern Altiplano. As the scenery changes, the white salt desert gives way to mineral-colored hills, eroded rock formations and remote valleys.

Arrive in Villa Mar, also known as Villamar, and check in to your accommodation. The evening is reserved for rest or, if conditions and timing allow, a short local photography session.

Photography focus: Incahuasi Island, giant cacti, panoramic salt-flat views, geological transitions and remote Andean landscapes.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 8 — Lost Italy: Sculpted Rocks and Night-Sky Photography

Overnight: Villa Mar region · Mallku Cueva or equivalent

Today focuses on Lost Italy, known locally as Italia Perdida, a remarkable landscape of weathered rock formations, narrow passages and sculptural geological shapes in southwestern Bolivia.

Explore the area during the best available daylight, using the changing direction of the sun to reveal textures, shadows, shapes and patterns. The unusual rock formations offer a contrasting subject to the broad horizons of Uyuni, allowing photographers to experiment with foreground detail and more intimate landscape compositions.

Return to the lodge for a break before a second photography session later in the day. If the weather, access and lunar conditions cooperate, the area may also offer an excellent setting for night-sky compositions that combine the rock formations with the stars.

Astrophotography will be planned around the Milky Way's seasonal position and the moon phase, rather than promising a specific celestial alignment every night.

Photography focus: Lost Italy landscape photography, sandstone textures, creative compositions, golden-hour light and potential Milky Way photography.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 9 — Laguna Colorada and the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve

Overnight: Southern Altiplano · Tayka del Desierto or equivalent, subject to routing and availability

Travel deeper into the remote southwestern Altiplano toward the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve.

The route crosses dramatic high-altitude terrain with mineral-stained lagoons, volcanic mountains, unusual rock formations and vast desert plains. Allow time for carefully chosen stops along the way, keeping the schedule flexible enough to respond to changing light.

Reach Laguna Colorada, one of Bolivia's most recognizable highland lakes. Its distinctive coloration varies with environmental conditions, while flamingos and other Andean wildlife can add life and scale to the scene.

Photograph the lagoon from permitted viewpoints, taking care to respect protected habitats and avoid disturbing wildlife. Later, continue to the selected overnight lodge in the southern Altiplano.

Photography focus: Laguna Colorada photography, flamingos, colorful mineral landscapes, volcanic scenery and high-altitude desert panoramas.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Important: The overnight location must be finalized against the route, available accommodation and the following day's drive to Tupiza.

Day 10 — Journey to Tupiza: Red Canyons and Desert Landscapes

Overnight: Tupiza · Hotel Mitru or equivalent

After breakfast, leave the remote southern Altiplano and continue toward Tupiza, a region celebrated for its red sandstone formations, narrow valleys, rugged mountains and dramatic desert scenery.

This is another substantial overland day. Photography stops will depend on the selected road, driving conditions and the time needed to reach Tupiza safely.

On arrival, check in to your hotel and, if time allows, explore a nearby viewpoint for late-afternoon light. The warm tones of the surrounding rock can provide a striking contrast to the pale salt flats and mineral-colored lagoons photographed earlier in the journey.

Photography focus: Red sandstone landscapes, canyon scenery, geological textures and the changing colors of the southern Bolivian mountains.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 11 — Tupiza Landscape Photography

Overnight: Tupiza · Hotel Mitru or equivalent

Enjoy a dedicated photography day exploring the distinctive landscapes around Tupiza. Depending on local access, the route may include the Quebrada de Palala and other nearby rock formations and valleys.

Begin with early light if conditions permit, using the low sun to emphasize the relief of the red sandstone formations. Later, photograph the contrasting shapes, textures and colors of the desert terrain, with opportunities for both panoramic compositions and tighter geological studies.

The afternoon offers flexibility for another session, reviewing images or resting before the return journey. This additional night also helps avoid treating Tupiza as merely a rushed transit stop.

Photography focus: Red-rock landscapes, sunrise and sunset, canyon compositions, abstract geological details and landscape storytelling.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 12 — Uyuni Train Cemetery and Final Astrophotography Session

Overnight: Uyuni — Jardines de Uyuni Hotel or equivalent

After breakfast, depart from Tupiza for the overland journey back to Uyuni. The drive will include planned comfort stops and a lunch break, with a conservative schedule to allow sufficient time for the afternoon photography session.

Upon arrival in Uyuni, visit the famous Uyuni Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes), where historic locomotives and railway carriages create striking subjects for industrial, documentary, and creative photography. Explore the weathered metal textures, geometric compositions, railway details, and wide-angle perspectives while making the most of the available afternoon light.

After the train cemetery session, check in to your hotel and enjoy some time to rest and prepare your camera equipment for the final evening of the expedition.

Weather and road conditions permitting, head to an appropriate dark-sky location near Uyuni for a final astrophotography session beneath the Bolivian night sky. With minimal light pollution away from the town, this session offers opportunities to photograph the Milky Way, star fields, and expansive high-altitude landscapes. The exact location and timing will depend on cloud cover, moonlight, road access, and the group's arrival time from Tupiza.

Conclude the expedition with a farewell dinner in Uyuni, sharing photographs and reflecting on the highlights of the journey through Bolivia's extraordinary Altiplano landscapes.

Photography focus: Historic locomotives, railway heritage, industrial textures, creative compositions, Milky Way photography, star trails, and night-sky landscapes.

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Best time to run this photography expedition

The ideal dates depend on whether the priority is a dry salt-flat surface, the mirror effect, or dark-sky astrophotography.

  • Dry season, generally April to October: Often favorable for access, dry salt textures, geometric patterns and stable road conditions. Cold nights are common at altitude.

  • Rainy season, generally December to March: Water on the Salar can create spectacular mirror-like reflections, but flooding and road access can affect Incahuasi Island and remote sections of the itinerary.

  • Astrophotography dates: Choose dates with a suitable moon phase, check the Milky Way's seasonal visibility, and allow flexibility for clouds and wind.

These are broad seasonal guidelines, not guarantees. The official Bolivia tourism portal also identifies May through September as a cold, dry period for Sajama

How to make this tour stand out from competitors

The competing itineraries you shared already feature the Uyuni salt flats, Sajama, the Valley of the Souls and other classic Bolivian landscapes. Your product should therefore differentiate itself through the complete experience rather than claiming that the destinations are unique.

For Photo Tours Peru, I would emphasize:

  1. Only four photographers. A clearly defined group limit, private transportation and more room to work at each location.

  2. Two dedicated nights in the Salar de Uyuni region. A stronger photography proposition than rushing through the salt flats in a single day.

  3. A complete landscape portfolio. White salt deserts, snow-covered volcanoes, red lagoons, flamingos, sculpted rocks and Tupiza's red canyons.

  4. A genuine astrophotography focus. Planned night-sky sessions, lunar-phase considerations and suitable foregrounds, with clear expectations about weather.

  5. A distinctive route ending in Uyuni. The tour begins in La Paz and concludes in Uyuni, with no unnecessary return to La Paz at the end.

The strongest sales message is: a private Bolivia photography expedition designed around light, landscape diversity and night-sky opportunities, limited to four photographers.
