Northern Peru Bird Photography Expedition: Hummingbirds & Endemic Birds — 14 Days
Northern Peru Bird Photography Expedition: Hummingbirds & Endemic Birds 14 Days
Tour Overview
Discover the extraordinary birdlife of northern Peru on a 14-day bird photography expedition designed for photographers who want to capture hummingbirds, endemic birds, colorful tanagers, and remarkable species of the Andean cloud forest.
From the hummingbird gardens of Moyobamba to the cloud forests of Abra Patricia and the habitat of the spectacular Marvelous Spatuletail, this expedition combines carefully selected photography locations with dedicated time to observe bird behavior, compose images, and work with changing natural light.
Northern Peru is an exceptional destination for bird photographers because its varied elevations and habitats support an extraordinary diversity of species. The route connects several important bird photography locations, offering opportunities to photograph hummingbirds, forest birds, tanagers, antpittas, and other wildlife.
A Photography-Focused Expedition
Unlike a conventional birdwatching tour that prioritizes observing as many species as possible, this expedition emphasizes photography.
We plan dedicated sessions at selected birding locations, allowing participants to work on exposure, composition, background separation, autofocus, and capturing birds in flight. Depending on the location and available conditions, photography opportunities may include natural perches, flowering plants, established feeding gardens, and forest observation areas.
Our itinerary balances early-morning photography with afternoon sessions and transfers between habitats. We also allow time to review images, prepare camera equipment, and rest between activities.
Photograph the Marvelous Spatuletail
One of the principal target species is the Marvelous Spatuletail, a spectacular hummingbird endemic to northern Peru. Its distinctive elongated tail feathers make it one of the region's most sought-after subjects for bird photographers.
Other potential photographic subjects include the Rufous-crested Coquette, Wire-crested Thorntail, Royal Sunangel, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Peruvian Racket-tail, and a variety of colorful tanagers.
The precise species encountered will depend on season, weather, habitat conditions, and bird activity. No wildlife sighting or particular photographic result can be guaranteed.
Explore Northern Peru's Bird Photography Habitats
During the expedition, we explore a variety of environments, including hummingbird gardens, foothill forests, humid cloud forests, and montane habitats.
These different environments provide opportunities to photograph birds with contrasting colors, behaviors, and ecological adaptations.
Our specialist guides help identify photographic opportunities and select suitable locations based on the day's conditions and the group's target species.

Best season to promote this tour
Both reference itineraries highlight the northern Peru cloud forests and hummingbird locations. The exact dates should be selected after confirming seasonal conditions with local lodges and guides.
For Photo Tours Peru, I recommend offering selected departures between March and November 2027, subject to local conditions and availability.
The best departure dates should account for rainfall, bird activity, the availability of target species, and the quality of photography conditions at each location.
Avoid promising that a particular hummingbird will appear on a particular date. Instead, explain that the route is designed to maximize photographic opportunities across several habitats.
