Manu National Park Photography Tour – 9 Days
A dedicated bird and wildlife photography expedition from the Andes to the Amazon rainforest of Peru.
Explore the extraordinary biodiversity of Manu National Park and the Manu Biosphere Reserve on a 9-day photography expedition designed for bird photographers, wildlife photographers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts.
Travel from the high Andes and misty cloud forests through the Manu Road into the Amazon lowlands, photographing a remarkable range of habitats and wildlife. Depending on season, weather, and animal activity, photographic opportunities may include the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, macaws, hummingbirds, toucans, tanagers, Giant River Otters, monkeys, caimans, and other Amazonian wildlife.
The expedition is built around photography rather than rushed sightseeing, with early-morning and afternoon field sessions, experienced local guides, selected jungle lodges, river excursions, forest trails, and opportunities to photograph wildlife in its natural environment.
9 Days / 8 Nights • Bird Photography • Wildlife Photography • Manu National Park • Amazon Rainforest • Peru
Private departures and small-group photography experiences available.
Manu Road: From the Andes to the Amazon
The legendary Manu Road follows one of the most dramatic ecological gradients in Peru, descending from the high Andes through elfin forest and cloud forest toward the Amazon Basin.
For photographers, this changing elevation creates an extraordinary variety of habitats within a single expedition. Along the route, you may photograph Andean birds, hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans, cloud-forest species, butterflies, orchids, and eventually the wildlife of the Amazon lowlands.
The combination of altitude, habitat diversity and changing environmental conditions makes the Manu Road an important part of a Peru bird photography and wildlife photography expedition.
A Photography Journey Through Multiple Ecosystems
One of the greatest strengths of a Manu National Park photography tour is the extraordinary range of ecosystems encountered along the journey.
High Andes
The expedition begins in the highlands around Cusco and the eastern Andes, where open mountain landscapes and high-elevation habitats offer opportunities to photograph Andean birds and dramatic mountain scenery.
Elfin & Cloud Forest
As the route descends along the Manu Road, the environment becomes cooler, wetter and densely vegetated. This cloud-forest zone is home to hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans, trogons and the iconic Andean Cock-of-the-Rock.
Amazon Foothills
Lower elevations bring warmer temperatures, tropical vegetation and a rapidly changing bird community. Forest trails, rivers and lodge gardens provide opportunities for bird portraits, behavioral photography and environmental compositions.
Amazon Lowlands
Deep in the Manu rainforest, photographers explore river systems, oxbow lakes, clay licks and primary forest habitats. Here, the photographic possibilities expand to include macaws, parrots, toucans, monkeys, Giant River Otters, caimans and many other Amazonian species.
This exceptional ecological gradient allows photographers to build a diverse Peru wildlife photography portfolio during a single expedition.

Green Team Commitment – Responsible Photography with Photo Tours Peru
At Photo Tours Peru, we believe photography should protect the places we explore. Every photography expedition—from the Andes to the Amazon—is guided by a Green Team philosophy, ensuring that our tours respect nature, wildlife, and local communities.
Our goal is simple: capture extraordinary images while leaving every location better than we found it.
1. Leave No Trace Photography
Our photography tours follow the internationally recognized Leave No Trace principles, which emphasize minimizing environmental impact when traveling in nature.
Key practices include:
• Carry out all trash and waste
• Avoid single-use plastic bottles
• Stay on established trails and paths
• Do not move rocks, plants, or natural elements for photos
• Leave archaeological sites and landscapes untouched
These practices protect fragile ecosystems and help preserve natural landscapes for future generations.
2. Respect Wildlife and Natural Habitats
Wildlife photography requires patience and responsibility.
On our tours we:
• Observe animals from a safe distance
• Never feed or disturb wildlife
• Avoid loud noise or sudden movement
• Use telephoto lenses instead of approaching animals
If wildlife changes behavior, it means the photographer is too close and must move away.
3. Protect Cultural Heritage
Many photography tours visit indigenous communities and historic sites.
Our Green Team approach includes:
• Always asking permission before photographing people
• Respecting cultural traditions and sacred places
• Supporting local artisans and communities
• Avoiding staged or exploitative photography
Photography should tell respectful human stories, not exploit them.
4. Small Group Photography Expeditions
All Photo Tours Peru expeditions prioritize small groups to reduce environmental impact.
Benefits:
• Less pressure on fragile ecosystems
• More respectful interaction with local communities
• Better photography opportunities
• Lower environmental footprint
Sustainable photo tours often limit groups to ensure minimal disturbance to nature.
5. Support Local Communities
Responsible tourism helps protect destinations when local people benefit from tourism.
Photo Tours Peru supports:
• Local guides and communities
• Family-owned lodges and homestays
• Indigenous cultural projects
• Local conservation initiatives
When communities benefit economically from tourism, they are more motivated to protect their environment and culture.

Amazon Wildlife Photography in Manu National Park
Giant River Otters
Monkeys of the Amazon Rainforest
Manu offers opportunities to photograph different monkey species moving through the rainforest canopy and along riverine habitats. Rather than simply collecting species photographs, the expedition focuses on natural behavior, movement, feeding, social interactions, and environmental portraits.
Capybaras and Riverine Wildlife
Capybaras are closely associated with the waterways and open areas of the Amazon. Their size, social behavior, and relationship with the surrounding landscape can create strong wildlife and environmental photography opportunities.
Caimans and Amazon Reptiles
The rivers, lagoons, and forest edges of Manu provide opportunities to photograph caimans and other reptiles. These encounters can produce detailed close-up images as well as wider environmental compositions showing the relationship between wildlife and the Amazon ecosystem.
Tapirs in the Amazon Forest
Tapirs are among the most distinctive mammals photographers may encounter in the Amazon. Because wildlife encounters are naturally unpredictable, photographing tapirs requires patience, careful observation, and a good understanding of animal movement and habitat.
Birds of Manu National Park
Bird photography is an important part of the Manu experience, from colorful canopy species to birds associated with rivers, forest edges, and other specialized habitats. Different environments and elevations provide photographers with changing backgrounds, natural light, and behavioral opportunities.
Nocturnal Wildlife Photography
The Amazon changes dramatically after sunset. Night photography can reveal a different side of Manu, with opportunities to observe nocturnal mammals, reptiles, insects, frogs, and other rainforest wildlife. These outings add a completely different photographic dimension to a daytime wildlife expedition.
