Qoyllur Rit’i Photography Tour Peru
Photograph one of the Andes’ most extraordinary pilgrimages.
Join our 4-day Qoyllur Rit’i Photography Expedition in the highlands of Cusco, Peru, and document one of the country’s most visually powerful expressions of Andean faith, culture and tradition.
This expedition is designed for photographers who want more than sightseeing. You will photograph pilgrims, traditional dancers, Quechua communities, ceremonial moments, colorful textiles, mountain landscapes and the dramatic night pilgrimage around the Sanctuary of Qoyllur Rit’i, surrounded by the high peaks of the Ausangate region.
With a professional photographer-guide, small-group approach and dedicated time for photography, we focus on observation, composition, natural light and respectful documentary storytelling.
This is an authentic Andean cultural and documentary photography experience for photographers who want to connect with Peru beyond the usual tourist routes.
What Will You Photograph at Qoyllur Rit’i?
Qoyllur Rit’i offers an extraordinary variety of photographic subjects within a single expedition. The goal is not simply to attend the festival, but to build a meaningful visual story of the people, traditions and landscapes surrounding this sacred Andean pilgrimage.
Traditional Dances and Costumes
Photograph vibrant traditional costumes, masks, musicians and ceremonial dances while learning about their cultural significance.
Pilgrims and Human Stories
The pilgrimage provides powerful opportunities for documentary photography and environmental portraits. With patience and respect, you can capture authentic moments of devotion, movement and community.
Night Pilgrimage
One of the most distinctive photographic experiences is the night procession. Candles, headlamps and moving groups of pilgrims create opportunities for atmospheric low-light and long-exposure photography.
Andean Landscapes
The sanctuary lies in an extraordinary high-altitude environment surrounded by dramatic peaks and glaciers of the Ausangate region. These landscapes provide a powerful setting for wide-angle and environmental storytelling images.
Details and Cultural Moments
Look beyond the obvious scenes. Textiles, hands, musical instruments, offerings, footprints, expressions and small interactions can become some of the strongest images in a documentary series.
Photography With Respect
Qoyllur Rit’i is a living spiritual tradition, not a staged performance. We encourage photographers to ask permission when appropriate, avoid interrupting ceremonies and prioritize respectful observation over intrusive photography.

Qoyllur Rit’i is not a conventional photography tour. This is a high-altitude pilgrimage and photography expedition involving long walks, cold temperatures, camping and night trekking.
The route reaches elevations of approximately 4,600 meters (15,000 feet) and includes extended periods of walking at high altitude.
Participants should be comfortable walking for several hours, carrying a small daypack and spending time outdoors in cold and changing mountain conditions.
We strongly recommend spending several days in Cusco or another high-altitude destination before the expedition to allow your body to acclimatize.

Qoyllur Rit’i Photography Tour Peru – 4-Day Andean Festival Expedition

Day 1: Cusco - Mawayani - Sanctuary Qoyllurit'i.
At 05.00am we begin one of the most important pilgrimages of the Andes towards Lord of Qoylluriti Sanctuary(15,000 ft (4.57 km)), located in a breathtaking spot and surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We slowly hike though an uphill trail, along which we will encounter 14 crosses that are venerated on the way; the last one is already located at the Sanctuary. Upon arrival, we will be accommodated at our camp, take a rest and then we’ll have breakfast. Afterwards we will visit the chapel with hundreds of indigenous people, visitors and the groups of dancers and musicians. Lunch.
In the afternoon we’ll visit the “Alacitas” market. This is a very curious display in which one buys miniature goods such as cars, houses, cattle, university titles and others, that are only valid during the Qoyllurit’i festivity, in line with one’s real wishes. The legend says that whatever you accomplish in this “ritual”, will come true thanks to the power of the Lord of Qoyllurit’i. We stay overnight and then have dinner.

Day 2: Sanctuary of Qoylloritti.
Day 4: Sunrise Ceremony & Return to Cusco.
This day is fully spent at the Sanctuary, following the activities of the pilgrims. We attend the “Alacitas” market in the morning. This is a very curious display in which one buys miniature goods such as trucks, houses, cattle, university titles and others, with money that is only valid during the Qoyllur Ritti festivity, according to one’s real wishes. The legend says that whatever you accomplish in this game will come true thanks to the power of the Lord of Qoylloritti. The Soul Mass at the Sanctuary atrium (10.00 am) is the next event, followed by the “Pablitos” mass at 12.00 pm. The afternoon is reserved for other activities, for all wanting to join them: the procession of the Lord of Tayancani and the Virgin, several dancing performances, mass at the Sanctuary at 06.00 pm and the singing to the Lord at 07.00 pm. At night, after dinner, we enjoy the spectacular “Burning of Castles”, in which wooden constructions with fireworks are burnt, followed by the “Child’s Dance”. Afterwards, the pilgrims ascend to the snow-capped mountain and glacier to bring down the crosses to the Sanctuary.
Day 3:Sanctuary of Qoylloritti – Yanacocha – Night Pilgrimage to Tayancani.
After an ealy wake up, we pack our bags and get ready for the pilgrimage. We wait and attend the Blessing Mass at 10.00 am and at noon, we leave in the so-called “24 hour procession”, together with the rest of pilgrims. The procession leaves from the Sanctuary and runs through Calvario Machucruz, the lagoons in Kumukasa and Alqamarina sectors, until reaching Yanacocha, where we arrive at around 06.00 pm. We sleep for 3-4 hours until 10.00 pm, when we start walking during the night towards Tayancani. Night hike.
After a spectacular night pilgrimage, we wait for sunrise and the impressive “Sun Greeting” ceremony (07.00 am) to descend to Tayancani and attend the Blessing to Sanctuary and village of the same name (08.00 am). We attend the mass (10.00 am) and then follow our hike up a mountain pass (2h) and then down to Ocongate (1h), where we have lunch. In the afternoon, we board our private transportation back to Cusco (5h), where we expect to arrive around 06.00 pm. End of our Lord of Snowstar Festival Trek | Photo Expedition.

What to Pack
We recommend that you bring the following items with you:
A fleece or down jacket is an essential item at this elevation;
Hiking trousers with zip off shorts are a good idea, as day time temperatures can be quite warm, yet temperatures plummet as soon as the sun goes down. You can supplement these with leggings or thermals to wear underneath;
A rain poncho or waterproof jacket is also important. It can rain or even snow at certain times of the year!;
Water-resistant trekking boots are advisable. The trail on this hike can sometimes be muddy and wet, so we also recommend to bring extra socks!;
A warm sleeping bag, rated to -15°C (5°F). If you prefer, you can rent one from us;
A headlamp or torch;
A high factor (SPF) sunscreen, a sun cap and sunglasses. The sun can be really strong, especially in dry season. Sun protection is essential!;
A small daypack to carry your necessary items for each day’s hiking.
For our full packing list for treks in the Andes, see What to Bring.
Important Info
Each guide has their own preferred route and so the route you trek might not correspond exactly to the route described here.
The times cited in this Qoylloriti pilgrimage itinerary are approximate. Walking times depend on the group, and the guide may change lunch spots and campsites depending on the progress of the group.
The Ausangate region is at very high altitude, and you’ll be hiking close to glaciers and snow-covered mountains. Translation: it’s very cold! Temperatures can fall well below zero at night. We strongly recommend using a sleeping bag good for at least -15˚C.
This is a totally off-the-beaten-path trek, and tourist infrastructure is very limited. Instead, we’ll be making use of local facilities where possible.

Green Team Commitment – Responsible Photography with Photo Tours Peru
At Photo Tours Peru, we believe photography should protect the places we explore. Every photography expedition—from the Andes to the Amazon—is guided by a Green Team philosophy, ensuring that our tours respect nature, wildlife, and local communities.
Our goal is simple: capture extraordinary images while leaving every location better than we found it.
1. Leave No Trace Photography
Our photography tours follow the internationally recognized Leave No Trace principles, which emphasize minimizing environmental impact when traveling in nature.
Key practices include:
• Carry out all trash and waste
• Avoid single-use plastic bottles
• Stay on established trails and paths
• Do not move rocks, plants, or natural elements for photos
• Leave archaeological sites and landscapes untouched
These practices protect fragile ecosystems and help preserve natural landscapes for future generations.
2. Respect Wildlife and Natural Habitats
Wildlife photography requires patience and responsibility.
On our tours we:
• Observe animals from a safe distance
• Never feed or disturb wildlife
• Avoid loud noise or sudden movement
• Use telephoto lenses instead of approaching animals
If wildlife changes behavior, it means the photographer is too close and must move away.
3. Protect Cultural Heritage
Many photography tours visit indigenous communities and historic sites.
Our Green Team approach includes:
• Always asking permission before photographing people
• Respecting cultural traditions and sacred places
• Supporting local artisans and communities
• Avoiding staged or exploitative photography
Photography should tell respectful human stories, not exploit them.
4. Small Group Photography Expeditions
All Photo Tours Peru expeditions prioritize small groups to reduce environmental impact.
Benefits:
• Less pressure on fragile ecosystems
• More respectful interaction with local communities
• Better photography opportunities
• Lower environmental footprint
Sustainable photo tours often limit groups to ensure minimal disturbance to nature.
5. Support Local Communities
Responsible tourism helps protect destinations when local people benefit from tourism.
Photo Tours Peru supports:
• Local guides and communities
• Family-owned lodges and homestays
• Indigenous cultural projects
• Local conservation initiatives
When communities benefit economically from tourism, they are more motivated to protect their environment and culture.
Qoyllur Rit’i is an extraordinary opportunity for documentary, cultural and travel photography in the high Andes of Peru.
