For photographers, choosing a Machu Picchu ticket is not simply about finding an available date. You need to think about the circuit, route, entrance time, direction of light, weather, crowd levels, and the type of images you want to create.

At Photo Tours Peru, we plan Machu Picchu photography experiences around these factors so photographers can spend their limited time in the sanctuary making images—not discovering too late that they purchased the wrong ticket.

The official Machu Picchu visitor system currently consists of 3 circuits containing 10 routes. Circuit 1 is the Panoramic Circuit, Circuit 2 is the Classic Machupicchu Circuit, and Circuit 3 is the Royalty Circuit. Some routes are available only during high season.

WHY MACHU PICCHU TICKETS ARE SO IMPORTANT FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

A normal traveler may simply ask:

“Is there a ticket available?”

A photographer should ask:

“Which route gives me the photographic perspective I need, and what time should I enter?”

This distinction is extremely important.

Your ticket determines the route you can follow, your permitted entry time, and the photographic perspectives available to you.

The Ministry of Culture states that the entry time printed on the ticket must be respected, with a 30-minute tolerance for entry.

That means you cannot simply arrive whenever the light becomes perfect.

The ticket comes first. The photography plan must be built around it.

THE THREE MACHU PICCHU CIRCUITS

CIRCUIT 1 – PANORAMIC

For photographers looking for the classic panoramic Machu Picchu photograph, Circuit 1 is particularly important.

The panoramic circuit includes routes such as:

• Route 1-A – Machupicchu Mountain
• Route 1-B – Upper Terrace
• Route 1-C – Intipunku, available during high season
• Route 1-D – Inca Bridge, available during high season

Availability depends on the applicable season and ticket capacity.

Why photographers should consider Circuit 1

This circuit provides access to elevated viewpoints where you can create the iconic relationship between:

Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu + surrounding Andes

The Upper Terrace route (1-B) is especially relevant when the primary objective is the classic panoramic composition.

For photographers who want the famous Machu Picchu postcard image, this is one of the first routes we evaluate.

CIRCUIT 2 – CLASSIC MACHUPICCHU

Circuit 2 is designed around the classic visit to the archaeological city and includes:

• Route 2-A – Designed Route
• Route 2-B – Lower Terrace Route

This is an excellent choice for photographers who want more than the panoramic viewpoint.

You can photograph architectural details, terraces, stonework, temples, plazas, and the relationship between Inca architecture and the surrounding mountains.

However, if your only objective is the iconic panoramic photograph, you should carefully compare Circuit 2 with the panoramic routes before purchasing.

Circuit 3 includes routes such as:

• Route 3-A – Machupicchu Mountain
• Route 3-B – Designed Route
• Route 3-C – Great Cavern, available during high season
• Route 3-D – Huchuypicchu, available during high season

This circuit is particularly interesting for photographers who want to combine Machu Picchu with additional mountain and landscape perspectives.
